holi-food

With Holi almost here ( Holi for 2016 falls on March 24, if you are unaware of it yet ), and with the festival comes the combined celebration of fun, food and frolic. Maybe, this might be the only Indian festival that brings together these three aspects of celebration on an extraordinary level of gaiety. Being the food lovers that we are, here is our pick of the favorites from the festival spread that we absolutely can’t do without for any Holi celebration. Over and above the explosions of taste, what it truly stands for, ( we say for most of us ), are the associated memories it brings us of Holis past, an integral part of our social consciousness.

Thandai

The perennial / traditional favorite, we love the time-tested and followed recipe when it comes to Thandai, specifically the chilled almond-flavored elixir that is perfect to cool your body down and set your spirits soaring.

Gol Gappe

The exquisite feeling of dunking a gol gappa in the traditional jal-jeera – prepared the traditional sour way ofcourse – and then demolishing that heavenly combination of crunchy, ‘liquidy’, crispy goodness in one determined snap of your jaws – has to be done to be believed. And then one repeats the process – through the blinding pichkaaris and the gooey facials that land on you at regular intervals.

Gujia

Originally from Rajastan, stuffed with khoya, raisins and nuts and anything that will add to its crunchy goodness – Gujias are an integral part of Holi celebrations as the colors, if you ask us.

While the above are the perennial favorites, let us not forget the long line of delicacies that equally vie for attention – starting with Meetha Poodas, Bread Dahi Vade, Puran Poli, Papri, Dahi Bhalle , Barfi, Malpua , Kanji Ke Vade , Sweet Rice and Khasta Kachodi, for starters.
